Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care, where you set the pace

Trauma-informed care is not a single technique. It is a way of working that recognizes how difficult experiences can shape the way a person feels, reacts and trusts, and it builds safety, choice and pacing into every session. At Psi Wellness it is the default, whatever brings you in.

What trauma-informed means in practice

Trauma-informed care at Psi Wellness means a paced, safety-first approach to difficult experiences. Day to day, that comes down to a few commitments that shape every session, whether we are working on anxiety, a relationship, ADHD, or something that happened long ago.

  • Choice: You decide what to talk about, when, and how much.
  • Pacing: We move at a speed that feels workable, and slow down when it does not.
  • Collaboration: Goals and methods are agreed together, never imposed.
  • Transparency: I explain what we are doing and why, so nothing comes as a surprise.

Steadiness comes first

Difficult experiences can leave the body on alert long after the danger has passed. So before turning toward anything painful, we build footing: grounding skills, ways to notice when you are getting overwhelmed, and an agreed way to pause if a session starts to feel like too much. DBT skills for tolerating distress and regulating emotion are especially useful here, and CBT skills come in where they earn their place.

You never need to share more than you are ready to. Some people eventually talk through what happened in detail. Others never do, and the work focuses on skills, patterns and present-day goals instead. Both are valid ways to do this work.

Feeling safe enough is not a step before the work. It is part of the work.

Not only for PTSD

Trauma-informed care is not reserved for one diagnosis. It shapes work on trauma and PTSD, and it also shapes sessions about anxiety, grief, relationships and ADHD, because past experiences can influence how any of those feel. It matters with couples and families, where old hurts can surface in the room, and with teens, who deserve the same right to choice and pacing as adults. The page on therapy for veterans describes how it shapes that work too.

It is also not a specific trauma protocol. It is a stance that sits alongside the approaches used here, which are described on how I work: solution focused therapy, CBT, ACT and DBT skills.

A free 15-minute consultation is the simplest place to start. No commitment, just a short conversation about what you are looking for.

What you can expect

Expect to be asked rather than told. Expect check-ins about how a session is landing, and permission to say that something is not working. Expect an explanation before anything new is tried. And expect the pace to stay in your hands, including the choice to slow down or change direction at any point.

Psi Wellness is an outpatient practice, not a crisis service, and diagnosis and medication sit with medical providers. If you are in immediate danger, call 911, or call or text 988. The crisis resources page lists more urgent help lines.

Common questions

Do I have to talk about my trauma?

No. You decide what to share and when. Therapy can focus on skills and present-day goals without going into detail about what happened.

Is trauma-informed therapy a type of treatment?

It is better understood as a way of working. It shapes how any approach is delivered, with an emphasis on safety, choice, collaboration and pacing.

What if I feel overwhelmed during a session?

We slow down or pause. Grounding skills are practiced early so they are ready when needed, and the pace can change at any point.

How is this different from the trauma and PTSD page?

The trauma and PTSD page is about working through what happened. This page is about the way every session is run, whatever the topic, so the same principles apply whether or not trauma is part of your story.

Does trauma-informed care work by telehealth?

The same commitments to choice and pacing apply on video as in the room. Meeting from your own space can feel steadier, and sessions are available by secure video anywhere in Florida or in person at the Tampa office.
