Alcohol Use
A clear-eyed look at drinking, without the lecture
Drinking can creep upward quietly. A glass to unwind becomes two or three, weekends start on Thursday, and mornings feel heavier than they used to. If you have started to wonder about your drinking, this is a place to look at it honestly, without labels or lectures, in Tampa or by telehealth.

When it might be worth a closer look
There is no single line that makes drinking a problem. It can be worth a conversation when alcohol has become the main way you relax, sleep or get through social plans, when promises to cut back keep slipping, or when the people closest to you have started to worry. There is no requirement to hit a low point or accept a label first. Curiosity is enough.
- Creeping upward: Drinking more, or more often, than you meant to.
- Sleep and mornings: Using alcohol to fall asleep, and waking up tired anyway.
- Plans that slip: Promises to cut back that last a few days and then fade.
- Worried people: Partners, friends or family raising it, even gently.
What the drinking is doing for you
Alcohol usually does a job before it becomes a problem. It might quiet anxiety, soften loneliness, take the edge off a stressful job, or make social situations easier. That job does not disappear when you cut back, so part of the work is finding other ways to meet the need underneath. Without that, willpower tends to run out.
I have worked as an addiction counselor across inpatient and outpatient settings. At Psi Wellness the work is outpatient and practical: no lectures, no assumptions, and no pressure to land anywhere you have not chosen.
You do not have to decide everything today. You only have to be willing to look.
Goals you choose
There is no assumption about where you should end up. Some people want to stop drinking altogether. Others want to cut down and stay in control. Others want to get clear before deciding anything. We start from your goal and adjust it if your thinking changes along the way.
From there, sessions look at triggers: the times, places and feelings that make drinking most likely, and the thoughts that come right before it. CBT helps question the 'I deserve it' or 'just one' logic. DBT skills give you ways to ride out an urge without acting on it. We also plan ahead for the situations that tend to be hardest, such as holidays, celebrations or a rough day at work.
A free 15-minute consultation is the simplest place to start. No commitment, just a short conversation about what you are looking for.
Book a SessionA note on medical safety
If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be medically risky, so talk with a physician before you stop. Medication or medical detox belongs with a physician, and I am glad to work in step with your care team. If you ever need a higher level of care, I will say so plainly and help you find it.
Psi Wellness is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911, or call or text 988. The crisis resources page lists more urgent help lines.
When someone you love is drinking
Worry about a partner's or parent's drinking is a reason to reach out in its own right. You can come in on your own to sort out your response and your boundaries, and family sessions are an option when everyone is willing. The broader addiction counseling page covers other substances and habits, and stress and burnout may be relevant if drinking has become the main way you come down from work.
Common questions
Do I have to quit completely?
No. Your goal is yours to set, whether that is stopping, cutting down or taking time to decide. We work toward the goal you choose and revisit it as things change.
Is this the same as addiction counseling?
It is part of it. This page focuses on alcohol, while addiction counseling covers substance use and other habits more broadly, with the same practical approach.
Can I do this by telehealth?
Yes, anywhere in Florida. Video sessions can make it easier to show up consistently, which matters when you are changing a habit. In person sessions are also available at the Tampa office.
