Divorce and Separation

Steady support while a relationship comes apart

Divorce and separation can upend almost everything at once: where you live, how your week runs, who you are as a partner and a parent. Even when ending it is the right call, the loss can be enormous. Counseling here gives you a steady place to think while so much is in motion, in Tampa or by telehealth.

What separation can stir up

The end of a relationship is a loss, even when you chose it. You may be grieving the person, the shared routines, or the future you had pictured together. Alongside the grief there can be relief, anger, guilt, fear about money or housing, and a strange loneliness in a home that is suddenly quiet. Feelings can swing from one day to the next. None of that means you are handling it badly.

  • Grief: For the relationship, the routines and the future you imagined.
  • Identity: Working out who you are outside of a partnership.
  • Decisions: Big choices about home, money and parenting, often made under stress.
  • Co-parenting: Learning to share children across two homes and two sets of routines.

A loss and a transition at once

Separation sits where grief and loss meets life transitions. There is something to mourn and something to build, often on the same day. Some weeks the work in sessions is about the hard feelings: anger that will not settle, guilt about the kids, or sadness that catches you off guard in the grocery store. Other weeks it is practical: setting up a new routine, handling a tense handover, or deciding what to say when people ask.

The solution focused side of the work keeps returning to what is in your control and what is already helping, even a little. That focus can feel steadying when so much else is not up to you.

Endings deserve care too. So does the person going through one.

Children, teens and the family as a whole

Kids and teens can react to separation in ways that are hard to read: irritability, withdrawal, slipping grades, or trying very hard to be no trouble at all. Family therapy can help a household adjust to its new shape, whether that means one home or two. Teens can also have sessions of their own, and the teen therapy page explains how parents stay involved while a teen keeps some privacy.

If you are a parent wondering whether your teen needs support, the guide for parents walks through signs worth noticing and how to raise the idea.

A free 15-minute consultation is the simplest place to start. No commitment, just a short conversation about what you are looking for.

If you are still deciding

Not everyone who reaches out has made a decision. If you and your partner are weighing whether to separate, couples therapy offers a balanced room to think it through together. If you are deciding on your own, individual therapy is a place to sort out what you want, without pressure in either direction.

Counseling is not legal advice, and questions about custody, property or the terms of a divorce belong with a family law attorney. Diagnosis and medication sit with medical providers.

Common questions

Can my ex and I come in together to work on co-parenting?

Ask about it during the free consultation. Whether joint sessions make sense depends on both people being willing and on it being safe to be in the room together.

Is it normal to feel relieved and sad at the same time?

Yes. Mixed feelings are a common part of separation. Relief does not cancel out grief, and grief does not mean you made the wrong decision.

Should my teen see a therapist too?

It depends on how they are coping. If your teen seems stuck, withdrawn or unusually angry for more than a few weeks, it is worth talking through. Teens can have sessions of their own, and family sessions give everyone a voice without putting anyone on the spot.

Can sessions be by telehealth?

Yes, anywhere in Florida. Video can be easier to fit around custody schedules and a reshuffled week, and in person sessions are available at the Tampa office.
