Social Anxiety

When other people's opinions take up too much room

Social anxiety is more than shyness. It is the dread before a meeting, the rehearsing of every line, and the hours spent replaying a conversation afterwards for evidence that you got it wrong. Therapy here works with that fear of judgment so it has less say over how you live.

How social anxiety shows up

Social anxiety tends to center on being watched, judged or embarrassed. It can show up at work, in class, on dates, at family gatherings, or in small moments like ordering food or making a phone call. Before the situation there is dread and rehearsal. During it, attention turns inward, toward your voice, your face, your hands. Afterwards comes the replay, picking apart every pause.

To get through, it is common to develop small safety habits: staying quiet, holding a phone like a shield, avoiding eye contact, or leaving early. They bring relief in the moment and a cost over time, because they never let you find out that the situation might have gone fine without them.

  • Rehearsing: Scripting what you will say before a call, a meeting or a party.
  • Replaying: Going back over a conversation for hours, looking for the mistake.
  • Safety habits: Staying quiet, holding your phone, or keeping close to one person.
  • Avoiding: Turning down invitations, opportunities or roles you actually want.

What it can cost

Avoidance can quietly shape a life. Job opportunities get passed over, friendships stay at arm's length, and dating feels like more trouble than it is worth. For teens and young adults, it can mean skipping class presentations, sitting out activities, or feeling left behind while others seem to find it all easy. Over time, the world can shrink to the few places that feel safe.

Social anxiety also tends to have a close relationship with a harsh inner critic, the voice that narrates every interaction and grades it afterwards. The self-esteem page describes how that part of the work goes.

The goal is not to become the loudest person in the room. It is to stop letting fear choose for you.

How we work with it

We start by mapping your particular version of social anxiety: which situations are hardest, what you predict will happen, and which safety habits you lean on. CBT then helps test those predictions in small, planned steps, so you can collect real evidence instead of relying on the replay. Each step is agreed together and sized to be a stretch, not a shock.

ACT adds a values lens. Instead of waiting for the anxiety to disappear before you act, we get clear on what matters to you, such as friendships, career or speaking up, and practice moving toward it with the nerves along for the ride. The solution focused side of the work looks at the times you already handled a social situation better than expected, and asks what made the difference.

A free 15-minute consultation is the simplest place to start. No commitment, just a short conversation about what you are looking for.

Starting where it feels manageable

For some people, even contacting a therapist is a social hurdle. Telehealth can make that first step easier, since you join from your own space anywhere in Florida, and in person sessions are available at the Tampa office whenever you are ready. If anxiety shows up beyond social situations, anxiety therapy covers the wider picture, and panic attacks has more on sudden surges of fear.

Teens can struggle with social anxiety as well, and the teen therapy page explains how sessions and parent involvement work. Diagnosis and medication sit with medical providers.

Common questions

Is social anxiety just shyness?

Not quite. Shyness is a temperament that plenty of people live with comfortably. Social anxiety involves fear and avoidance strong enough to get in the way of things you want or need to do.

Will I have to do things that terrify me?

No. Every step is planned together and sized to be manageable. The point is to build confidence gradually, not to overwhelm you.

Is telehealth a good place to start?

It can be. Meeting from home removes a few of the hardest parts, like the drive and walking into a new building. Coming to the office later can become part of the work if you want it to.
