Counseling for veterans, in plain language

Leaving the military can mean leaving a structure, a purpose and a team all at once. What comes after is not always easy to talk about, and it does not need to be dressed up in clinical language. Counseling here is direct and practical, in downtown Tampa or by telehealth anywhere in Florida.

Life after service

Service gives shape to a life: a mission, a schedule, a clear sense of what matters each day, and people who have your back. Civilian life can feel loose by comparison. Work may not carry the same meaning. Conversations can feel trivial. It can be hard to explain to people who were not there what you did, what you saw, or why ordinary situations sometimes put you on edge.

None of that is weakness. It is a real transition, and it deserves the same attention as any other big change in a life. There is no right time to reach out, whether you left the service last year or a long time ago.

  • Purpose: Finding direction once the mission and the structure are gone.
  • Sleep: Nights that will not settle, or waking up already on alert.
  • A short fuse: Irritability or anger that surfaces at home more than anywhere else.
  • Relationships: Reconnecting with a partner and kids, and renegotiating roles at home.

Hard memories, at your pace

If something difficult happened during your service, you decide when and how much to talk about it. The work begins with steadiness: skills for grounding yourself, control over the pace, and no pressure to share before you are ready. As that footing grows, we can turn toward what happened in a way that feels workable rather than overwhelming. The trauma and PTSD page describes this approach, and trauma-informed therapy explains the principles behind it.

You will not be asked to translate your experience into softer language, and there are no assumptions about what your service involved. Plain talk is welcome here.

You do not have to explain everything at once. Start with what is costing you most right now.

Home, family and the people around you

Coming home changes the people around you too. A partner may have run the household alone and now needs to renegotiate it. Kids may have grown used to a different rhythm. Couples therapy and family therapy give everyone a place to work through that readjustment, and individual sessions are always available for your own side of it.

If drinking has become the main way to come down at the end of the day, that is worth looking at openly, and alcohol use counseling describes how. If the bigger challenge is building a new direction, life transitions covers that work.

A free 15-minute consultation is the simplest place to start. No commitment, just a short conversation about what you are looking for.

What to know before you start

Psi Wellness is a private psychotherapy practice, offering outpatient counseling in downtown Tampa and by secure video anywhere in Florida. Diagnosis and medication sit with medical providers, and I can help you connect with the right person if either becomes part of the picture. Fees and insurance, including the full in-network plan list, are covered on the rates page.

This is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger, call 911, or call or text 988. The crisis resources page lists more urgent help lines.

Common questions

Do I need to talk about combat or deployment?

No. You decide what to bring in. Sleep, stress, work or relationships are all perfectly good places to start.

Can my spouse or partner come too?

Yes. Couples and family sessions are available, and partners can also reach out on their own if they are carrying a lot.

Can I do sessions by telehealth?

Yes, anywhere in Florida, as long as you are physically in the state at the time of the session. In person sessions are available at the downtown Tampa office, including Wednesday evenings and Saturdays.

What if therapy did not fit for me before?

That is useful to know, and worth talking through in the free consultation. Approaches differ, and the work here is practical, collaborative and paced by you.
